Mountains and Rivers： Melancholy and Sadness

The massive 2008 Wenchuan earthquake prompted the Chinese to wonder whether earthquakes are predictable. While earthquakes represent one big problem facing humanity， scarce water resources is another. Water shortages have already triggered a series of environmental and geological problems. Recent years have brought more frequent droughts in southern China. Nearly 90 percent of Chinese coastal cities are facing water shortages to varying degrees. The water quality of rivers， lakes and urban systems is deteriorating， and geological disasters occur more frequently. Just how bad is the present-day environment？
A former journalist with Xinhua News Agency and former director of Research Office of China’s State Council， Zhu Youdi recently published his new book Mountains and Rivers： Melancholy and Sadness， which elucidates such problems. Five years ago， Zhu published the book Looking Back， which discusses cultural heritage protection during the urbanization process. As a continuation of Looking Back， Mountains and Rivers： Melancholy and Sadness focuses on China’s ecological environment， especially the drastic changes to China’s landscape over the past 50 years， identifying problems with some projects.
“The awakening of science” is the major theme of the book.“Engineering technology has seen massive improvements these days，” writes Zhu. “The problem lies in the self-control of human beings and irresistible desires to pursue maximum profits. People need to learn constraint， and consideration should be given to all concerned parties， such as the relationship between humans， the land， and forests. This is the core problem plaguing our ecological civilization in the post industrialization period.”

A noted Chinese economist， author Mao Yushi begins the book with “facing up to social inequality，” before delving into deep discussions on topics such as China’s humble living situations for urban transplants， the gap between rich and poor and its causes， reflections on people’s interests， and looking towards future prospects. Mao， who is known for“speaking for the rich and working for the poor，” published the book at the age of 84. He makes rational analysis of various problems facing China today， supporting his argu- ment with case studies and statistics， while dissecting the Chinese mentality and modern way of life.

A 20-volume collection of designs across China’s long history， Chinese Design covers 8，000 years from the Neolithic Age to the early 20th Century. The book is classified， in terms of Chinese design history and new concepts of modern design， into sections about architecture （four volumes）， clothing and accessories （four volumes）， food and beverages （three volumes）， tools （three volumes）， utensils （three volumes） and stationery（three volumes）. The book selects 3，000 classical design cases （about 150 cases in each volume） from Chinese history and includes about 18，000 photos to better elucidate every aspect of social production and life in Chinese society and create an unprecedented documentation of Chinese design history.
Chinese Design is the cul- mination of eight years of pooled efforts from approximately 100 scholars and experts in academic and research fields related to domestic design in China. The work also represents an indispensably thorough classification and analysis of the classic design cases in China using scientific methods of empirical research in archeology， folklore， mechanics， iconology， art and semiotics. It is a new benchmark for both compilation scale and depth of study of modern Chinese academia.
