仿生化学的目的主要是从生物体的结构和生物体内的反应得到启示,用化学方法进行模拟,利用这些生物体的结构或反应原理,进一步简化或提高现有的生产过程和效率,为生产建设服务。这门学科是新兴的,尚处于萌芽状态,迄今尚少见这一方面的专门总结。从广义的仿生化学来说,古代劳动人民从植物中获得靛蓝作为染料,后来根据同一结构原理合成了各种颜色的靛类染料;从天然橡胶的结构分析了解到含有异戊二烯的单体结构,从而不断改进合成了比天然橡胶性能还好的合成橡胶;甚至近年来受到重视的昆虫激素类似物的合成等等均可纳入化学仿生的范畴。但是近年来由于对生命现象的认识不断深化,对生物化学的知识
