Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of microvasular decompression (MVD) on trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and the relationship between pontine vessels and trigeminal nerve “sensitive area ”. Methods The data of MVD in 36 TN patients from January 2005 to January 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. The curative effect, complications and adverse reactions were analyzed. Results Follow-up 3 months to 4 years 33 cases of pain disappeared, accounting for 91.67% of the total cases, no deaths. Conclusion MVD is an effective method for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. The correct identification of the responsible vessels in the trigeminal pontine trigeminal nerve and the “sensitive area” in the operation and adequate decompression is the key to ensure the microvascular decompression.
