湖南师范大学生物系与湘阴县东湖渔场合作,用细胞工程和有性杂交相结合培育成功一种优良的三倍体鲫鱼——工程鲫。1992年11月17日,在长沙市郊区红色渔场,由省科委主持了“工程鲫新闻发布会”。省领导万达、王治国、刘正及有关部门的领导出席了发布会,对该项科研成果给予了高度的肯定。 1992年,红色渔场在885亩水面中投放8.5万尾工程鲫寸子,与其它鱼类混养,取得显著的经济效益。亩放140—210尾平均规格28g/尾的工程鲫,经过320天左右的饲养,个体平均重量557—725g,最大个体可达1000g,平均亩产90—105kg,且不影响其它鱼类的生长。该鱼体型优美、肉质鲜嫩、内脏部分少,深受消费者
