In optical fiber communications, we often talk about the so-called multimode fiber, single-mode fiber. So, what is the “mold” in optical fiber? The mold is called mode in English. Simply put, it refers to the structure of the electromagnetic field in the optical fiber and the state of the electromagnetic field. We know that light waves are actually electromagnetic waves. The propagation of light waves in optical fibers is actually the propagation of electromagnetic fields in optical fibers. The mode in the optical fiber refers to the way in which the electromagnetic field propagates through the optical fiber. The propagation of an electromagnetic field is an electromagnetic field that follows Maxwell’s equations and propagates in an optical fiber.
