The classic autonomic nervous system (also known as the autonomic nervous system) consists of two components: cholinergic and adrenergic nerves. Recent data suggest that there is a third nerve component in the plant-derived nervous system, especially in the digestive tract. This third component is neither adrenergic nor cholinergic. There are already signs in the early literature suggesting the existence of this third component. Langley in 1898 noted that stimulating the vagus nerve can cause gastric relaxation. This diastolic effect was most pronounced after the excitatory effects of atropine on cholinergic fibers were blocked. When the adrenergic blocker was applied, the suppressive response to the vertebrate stomach still appeared, indicating some of the stomach
