Qin Shihuang dredged the canal and communicated with the provinces of the Five Wounds, the Central Plains and the Yangtze River Basin. It reached the Panyu Port (now Guangzhou) and the Port of Hepu through the Ling Qu and formed the ancient maritime Silk Road with the shortest distance between China and the West. The capital of Changsha in the Han Dynasty, Linxiang (now Changsha), is an important transit port for this important artery of transportation between China and the West. The large number of imported goods and silk from the Mawangdui Han Tombs is an important proof.
