EDGE的概念是Ericsson于1997年第一次提出的,并在1998年获ETSI批准。EDGE提供了一个从GPRS到第三代移动通信的过渡性方案,从而使现有的网络运营商可以最大限度地利用现有的无线网络设备,在第三代移动网络商业化之前提前为用户提供个人多媒体通信业务。
