中国画,凡描绘大自然景物者、咸称之为山水画。故凡画山水者,顾名思义,必善画山与水。古之画论中,论画山之法者多矣,而专论画水之法者寡矣。但这并非因为画山难而画水易。元代大画家黄公望曾说过:“山水中唯水口最难画。”古人视水为山之血脉,故要求把水画“活”,既有流动之形,又有潺潺之声。水口泉瀑之所以难画,便在于水从巅崖峻壁之间喷涌而出,其势若怒涛腾沸,奔崖注壑。其大者更有撼山摇海、惊天动地之势。要想在纸上画出这种气势,画者该有何等高超的技巧!
