有关喀什的名称,国内外学者众说不一,但他们都以自己的见解说明了喀什这个城市的基本概况。有个阿拉伯人认为这个城市是回历96年(公元715年),通过拍阿乃来新疆的以爱米尔库特拜为首的阿拉伯人命的名。有的说是佛教始祖认为这个城市是圣地,就把这地方定为“百图拉”(上帝的行宫地址)。他们的依据是随着佛教的发屐,认定这是一块圣地,就定名为“kāxī—nágà”。在佛教术语上“kāxī”是上帝,“nágà”是宫殿的意思,也就是“百图拉”;有的说是根据这个城市的雕刻工艺美术,以其雕刻的维语名称:nkāxī和kaxa 的字而把这个城市的名称定为:“喀什噶尔”;有的说是根据水磨河长堤的平整壮观风景而定名为“喀什噶尔”(堤岸的意思)。总之对喀什名称由来的上述说法,尽管不能以充分的事实准确的加以说明,但是,人们对这个城市在历史上所起的作用,所处的地位给予了
