In 1991, the best-selling book “The Machine for Changing the World” co-authored by James Womack and Dan Jones of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made “lean production” a popular concept in the corporate world. The “lean production” system pioneered by Japan’s Toyota Corporation means eliminating all unnecessary steps in the development, production, and sales process. Now, a new concept in the western business community - “thin enterprise” is beginning to show its prominence. In their book, Womack and Jones suggest how companies can reduce their business time and expenses by more than half by making three fundamental reforms. These reforms are: redesigning each business step, making them logical, and organizing them; reorganizing employees into cross-functional teams that specialize in an activity and constantly striving to optimize.
