Although optical machining technology has changed little in the past few years, new applications of this technology are emerging. Many of these applications shift to high-volume requirements, increasing the need for production-related diamond optical machining equipment. While diamond machining has proven to be cost-effective in the infrared field in the past, it has been necessary to downgrade host equipment in many new applications before it is proven that optical parts have low diamond processing costs. Recent advances in CNC lathe turning technology have enabled many small optical and mechanical shops to adopt this technology.
