古代道观和佛寺一样,都绘有壁画。从东汉到清代一千八百多年的历史进程中,随着道教的发展全国曾建数千道观,但是因宗教的兴废,自然和人为的损毁,特别是近代外强的掠夺,使道观大部残毁,壁画也所存无几。永乐宫是国内遗存早期壁画较为完好的唯一道观。其中的壁画是集中了唐、宋道教绘画精华形成的巨制,是道教壁画在长期发展过程中新形成的完整体系与艺术成就的光辉遗存,是宗教艺术的瑰宝。
