1950年12月31日17时,中国人民志愿军发动了抗美援朝战争中的第三次战役。中国第42军124师是打穿插的部队,部队中有一个后来很出名的士兵——19岁的冷树国。这个出生于辽宁的青年,在家乡时是个心灵手巧的小木匠,有一手不错的手艺,特别是能雕刻龙凤图案。家乡开展土地改革的那年,他参了军,加入了解放全中国的战斗。在部队,他接到弟弟写来的一封信,信上说:“你参军好几年了,也没见你立过什么功,村子里参军的人都有功了。老说为人民服务,可总得有点儿什么功呀。”冷树国说,这封信对他的刺激挺大。
