Over the past hundred years of history, Austria has undergone political, economic and social changes and reconstruction. Beginning with the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867, the country experienced the First World War and its land area was reduced. The clashes broke out between social democrats, Catholic conservatives and German nationalists. It was not until 1955 that after seven years of Nazi dictatorship and ten years of military occupation, Austria gained full independence and freedom and sovereignty. Nowadays, Austria has become one of the richest EU countries in the world. In the contemporary era, there are a large number of accomplished designers, many of whom are outstanding female designers.
