George Brig, a street fighter in Kinshasa, was the son of a flower trader who immigrated to the United States from Greece. He was born in 1931 as an Orthodox Greek youth born in Upper Bronx, an Irish settlement between the Broadway Viaduct and Saint John’s Catholic Church. He often recalled how he grew up in a ten-year melee between the Greeks and Irish, where his own nose was broken nine times.
