古代的人们主要依靠山脉、河流、日月和星辰来断定自己所在的位置。通常把太阳升起的方位叫作东方,太阳落下的方位叫作西方。那么在汉字里是怎样表现这些方位的呢?从今天的简化汉字里,很难看出“东”字是怎么来的。我们先把它复原到繁体:
Ancient people rely mainly on mountains, rivers, sun, moon and stars to determine their location. The direction of the rising sun is usually called the east, and the direction of the sun falling is called the west. So how are these aspects represented in Chinese characters? From today’s simplified Chinese characters, it is hard to see how the word “East” came from. Let’s restore it to Traditional:
