Alice Walker, a pivotal writer in the history of black female literature, broke through the tradition of man-based narrative style and succeeded in shaping some new black female images. From the visual angle of heroine Xili, Walker’s masterpiece “Purple” shows us how black women courageously break free from bondage and oppression through such resignations as racism and gender discrimination prevail. Under Camus’s existentialism, I explore how life’s pursuit of purple Xili’s life is riddled with absurdity. From absurd unconsciousness to consciousness, from absurdity to beyond absurdity, from the awakening of self-awareness to the essence of self The pursuit of happiness, and finally in the ridiculous way to survive.
