Due to the degeneration of pulp tissue, the root canal system can provide a portion of the antigen. These antigens can be bacteria (dead or viable) and their metabolites, host degenerative pulp tissue, or root canal therapy or root canal filling material. Antigen from the root canal system continuously into the periapical tissue, causing antibody formation. If a specific immunoglobulin is produced in the root canal against an antigen, then the interaction of the antigen with the antibody in the apical tissue can cause an immune response. According to this corollary, the corresponding immune cells and immunoglobulins appear in the periapical lesions. Because anti-complement immunofluorescence (ACIF) is more sensitive than direct immunofluorescence, the authors used this method to determine the presence or absence of immune complexes in human apical lesions.
