1998年,商人张爱军出面与吉林省体育局合建吉林东北虎篮球俱乐部,尽管球队在当年的甲B联赛中仅名列第三,但空军队的退出使这只东北虎幸运地重返了CBA联赛的山林。久违的联赛再次回到长春体育馆,使球迷们格外兴奋,几乎场场爆满,“魔鬼主场”名声鹊起。随着罗德的到来,虎王孙军终于找到了珠联璧合的搭档,加之王博、王晗、杜江等一批年轻队员的逐渐成熟,吉林队开始在CBA赛场上迅速崛起。在前两个赛季艰难保级后,这只“东北虎”开始显露峥嵘,不仅连续16个赛季杀入季后赛,而且在2002、2003年两夺联赛季军。
