美国是一个旅行的民族,其民族意识中的旅行情结赋予美国文学一种旅行的叙事本体。就19世纪美国文学而言,这种旅行叙事本体主要表现在以游记为代表的旅行文学和以诗歌和小说为代表的经典文学中的旅行叙事。其中,惠特曼的“大路旅行”诗歌、库柏的西行、麦尔维尔的大海旅行和马克·吐温的大河旅行是这一时期旅行叙事的典型表现,可以说,19世纪美国文学中的旅行叙事构成了整个美国文学的叙事本体。
The United States is a traveling nation. The traveling complex in its national consciousness gives the American literature a traveling narrative body. As far as American literature in the 19th century was concerned, this kind of traveling narrative is mainly manifested in travel literature represented by travelogue and travel narration in classical literature represented by poetry and novels. Among them, Whitman’s “A Great Way to Travel” poetry, Cooper’s westbound journey, Melville’s sea travel and Mark Twain’s river trips are typical examples of travel narration during this period.
