西班牙队在本届欧洲杯决赛中以1:0击败德国队,时隔44年再次登顶欧洲,而球队的中场核心哈维也毫无争议地荣膺本届欧洲杯最佳球员。2000年就入选了国家队的哈维,在2000年11月15日主场与荷兰队友谊赛中完成了国家队处子演出,之后他得到了卡马乔的赏识并参加了韩日世界杯,有过三场出赛纪录。2006年他在训练中右膝十字韧带严重拉伤,险些错过德国世界杯。而让人最为感到惊讶的是,哈维虽然入选了西班牙2004年欧洲杯23人名单,但并没有获得出场机会,本届欧洲杯竟然是他第一次在欧洲杯决赛阶段亮相。
