画画这玩艺,明清以来,都以“温润”为正宗,大部分的画我都不大喜爱,我喜爱“冷如冰”或“热如火”的艺术。所以,我喜爱弘仁和尚,写了不少研究弘仁的文章,最近又出版了两本研究弘仁的专著。弘仁的画寒光冷韵,咄咄逼人,真冷到了极致;倪云林的画也是冷的,他早期的画只是凉,后来才冷。所以,我也喜爱倪云林。古人以冷和静为最高的美,“热如火”的画,我一直没有找到典型。王炎林到南京来,办了一个世界上最小型的画展,每日特邀一位观众,总数只有四人。就在江南看惯了细秀的画风,一见炎林画,大为震动,这正是我要找的“热如火”的典型。南京每H都有画展,我百分之九十九不看,这个微型画展却出乎预料的打动了我,炎林告诉我,他在美术刊物上读过我“提倡阳刚大气”的文章,所以才来找知音的。王炎林的艺术当然是有土壤的,那首先是西北地区雄浑深沉阔大的气势。王炎林生长在西安,这里古称长安,历来被称为汉唐故地,完整地说是汉唐政治文化中心之故地,因为汉唐古都都在西安,汉的气厚和深沉雄大,唐的盛大和气势磅礴,一直成为传统。霍去病墓前的石兽质朴浑厚而深沉,唐陵前的石狮、有君临天下,压倒宇宙之慨,这在王炎林的画中都能发现其根基和血统。

Wang Yanlin’s art of course is a soil, then first of all the deep northwest imposing deep momentum. Wang Yanlin grew up in Xi’an, where Chang’an, the ancient name, has always been called the Han and Tang dynasties. It is a place full of Han and Tang political and cultural centers, because the ancient capital of Han and Tang dynasties are in Xi’an and the thick and deep of the Han dynasty.
