Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a contagious disease caused by one or a group of retroviruses that is characterized by severe systemic immune system damage. According to an international AIDS conference held in Atlanta in mid-April 1985, 11,000 AIDS patients have been diagnosed and reported. It is estimated that nearly 1 million people in the world are already infected with AIDS virus. In addition, according to the World Health Organization, more than 14,000 patients worldwide have AIDS by the end of August 1985. Epidemiological data show that the prevalence of this disease has not reached its peak, the incidence of AIDS in the next few years is expected to continue to maintain the trend of increasing year by year. Presumably, the United States will add about 40,000 new AIDS patients from 1986 to 1987.
