宫商角徵羽既不是诸如 C、D、E 之类的音名,也不是诸如 do、re、mi 之类的唱名,而却大体可类比于主音、属音、导音等称谓,是我国音阶的阶名。其中“角”唸 jué,不唸 jiǎo,“徵”唸 zhǐ,不唸 zhēng,且不能简化为“征”字。我国五声音阶只有五个音,可记为简谱的12356,依次相当于宫商角徵羽。但由于记谱常比较灵活,可采用多种记法,故上述对应关系并不是固定不变的。现以颂歌《东方红》前四小节为例:
