Canadian film theorist, University of Queensland professor Bill Nichols was invited to teach “Several Hypothetical Interpretations from Hitchcock” in 1986 at the China Film Critics Association Summer International Film Workshop. This topic is actually not only about Hitchcock’s research, but mainly through the introduction of several ways to explain Hitchcock films to illustrate the research and application of contemporary Western film theory. This article is a compilation and supplementation of four lectures by Professor Nichols to help readers understand why Hitchcock films that were “unvustrous” for nearly two decades have been discredited due to their diversity , Unity, popularity and rich connotation, that is worth studying the movie phenomenon.
