The impact of China’s WTO accession in any field in the country is far less than that of 900 million peasants. Last year, China relaxed restrictions on the import of U.S. citrus fruits for the implementation of the agreement on citrus between China and the United States. This spring, the first 1,800 boxes of U.S. oranges arrived in Shanghai and soon sold out. The 16 tons of oranges arriving in Dalian were also sold out in a matter of days despite being several times more expensive than domestically grown citrus Times Why? 70% of citrus present in China are smaller, thicker skin, poor taste and lower prices. The majority of growers lack the technical and marketing skills to compete with the foreign fruit growers with higher fruit quality.
