An outstanding reformer of Tang poetry during the flourishing years of the Tang Dynasty. Chen Zi’ ang was always concerned for the country and its people during the more than ten years of his official career. Politically, he attempted nothing and accomplished nothing, but he achieved a remarkable reform of the conventional showy and superficial style of the poetry popular in the former dynasties. By initiating a new style of poetry, he established his reputation in the history of Chinese literature. He stressed that poets must depict. besides the rise and fall of stars. the suffering of the people, and should express their own real feelings. Some of his writings are considered the finest examples of the Tang poetry. and indeed the peak of Chinese poetry.
