基本情况禹县鸠山农业生产合作社,在山的东南角下,距县城约六十华里。全社总人口1,377人,总土地面积2,290亩,其中堰地687亩,占总耕地30％。根据我们访问的材料,这里修堰地的历史,远在200年前就开始了。堰地目前分散在各队各社,几乎沟沟有堰台、台台有堰地,早已实现了沟底川台化。该地区是土石山区,土壤分布有红粘壤、白干子、黑壚土等。顶部土层较厚,中部土石混合,沟谷岩石裸露。人多地少、每人平均有地1.6亩,由于坡地广种薄牧,因而发展堰滩地是过去农民非常重视和很有经验的活动。
