中国人历来爱玉，喜欢赏玉和佩玉，玉文化在华夏传统文化中占有重要的地位。如今，在各种各样的玉石品种中，人们尤其喜爱翡翠。翡翠从广义上来说，是指具有商业价值，达宝石级的硬玉岩的商业名称，是各种颜色宝石级硬玉岩的总称；狭义的翡翠则专指那些绿色达宝石级的硬玉岩。
