Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance in insulin target tissues and 80% to 85% of individuals with type 2 diabetes have obesity. Resistin, also known as adipose tissue-specific secretory factor (ADSF), is a polypeptide hormone newly secreted by adipocytes, found in murine adipose tissue. It can cause insulin resistance in mice and obesity is small Increased levels of resistin in the mouse are therefore thought to be an intermediary between obesity and type 2 diabetes. Resistin was originally found in mouse white adipose tissue. Recently, many studies have found that there are many resistin expression in many tissues of human and a series of studies on its structure, function and so on. This article reviews the relationship between resistin and obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
