It is generally believed that the secretion of gonadotropins by endogenous opioid peptides may play a role of tension inhibition. Morphine has been reported to block ovulation in rats. Morphine, alpha-enkephalin, leu-enkephalin, beta-endorphin, and enkephalin analogues can reduce LH release. The opioid receptor antagonist naloxone can counteract or inhibit the action of endogenous opioids or stimulate the secretion of gonadotropins. Recently, it was found that the effects of naloxone on the LH secretion were different at different periods of the menstrual cycle of normal women, suggesting that ovarian steroid hormones may regulate the functional activity of endogenous opioid peptides in the hypothalamus-pituitary system.
