2013年4月5日,美联社宣布调整报道体例手册,不再接受记者将非法生活在某国的人士称为“非法移民”。美联社高级副总裁兼执行编辑卡瑟伦·卡罗尔表示,“‘非法’一词仅限于表示一种行为,不能使用在对某一社会阶层人士的‘标签’上”。美联社的这一修正是在广泛听取社会各阶层意见之后作出的。美联社上次的类似修正曾发生在“精神疾病”一词中。美联社要求作者在报道中说清精神疾病的具体名称,而不是大而化之的“精神疾病”。
On April 5, 2013, the Associated Press announced a restructuring of its reporting manuals and no longer accepted journalists as “illegal immigrants” who illegally lived in a country. The senior vice president and managing editor of the Associated Press, Carcell Carroll, said that the term “illegal” is limited to an act that can not be used on a ’tag’ of a social class. The AP’s amendment is made after extensively listening to the opinions of all sectors of society. The Associated Press last time a similar amendment occurred in the “mental illness” in the word. The Associated Press demanded that the author clarify the specific name of the mental illness rather than the “mental illness” in the report.
