Background Outside the clinic, blood pressure is measured using a blood pressure measuring device, and high blood pressure can be detected and treated. Currently in the UK, GP clinics are the main places where BP can be measured. Objective To investigate the causes of blood pressure measurement with or without blood pressure self-test instruments. Design and Location This cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted in Oxfordshire, England. Methods Semi-structured interviews and recording, recording and sorting of personnel recruited by posting advertisements in general surgery clinics and communities. Results Of the 30 respondents, 20% had hypertension and almost half of the respondents had self-rated blood pressure. Respondents who did not have a history of high blood pressure paid little attention to the issue of blood pressure, and their self-test of blood pressure in the waiting room was just to pass the waiting time or to help the general practitioner measure the project. However, respondents with a history of hypertension say their self-test blood pressure is designed to avoid the symptoms associated with White Coat Syndrome and to take the initiative to control the blood pressure measurement process. Respondents said the self-test rate of blood pressure is not high mainly because of lack of self-test blood pressure awareness, uncertainty about their own measurement techniques and reluctance to measure blood pressure in public. But unexpected, several respondents said they prefer to self-test blood pressure in the waiting room instead of at home. Conclusions Self-rated blood pressure is acceptable to the public. In the future, there is a need to reinforce awareness of the need for self-rated blood pressure by people who have not self-tested blood pressure and to promote the location and use of blood pressure self-test instruments. General practice clinic staff should provide self-rated blood pressure services to those hypertensive patients who are unwilling or unable to self-test blood pressure at home.
