Objective To understand the antibody production of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) among practitioners in Guangzhou Xinyuan Wild Animal Market and the relationship between exposure of civets and the results. Methods The SARS virus serum antibody was monitored in the volunteers in the wild animal market and the monitoring results were combined with the presence of civets in the market. Results In May, December and December 2003, in January and July 2004 and June 2005, the survey conducted a total of 328,238,135,139 and 53 market practitioners respectively. The detection rate of IgG antibodies to SARS virus was 25.61%, 13.03%, 12.59%, 5.04% and 9.43% respectively. No SARS virus IgM antibody was detected. Of the 129 people who were surveyed for more than two visits, 97 had a negative serum antibody and 18 had been positive; 13 had changed from positive to negative, and one changed from negative to positive. After clearing the civet cats entered the market staff, SARS virus IgG antibody test all negative. Conclusions The detection rate of SARS virus antibody among the employees of Xinyuan wild animal market in Guangzhou is closely related to the existence of civet cats in the market.
