This article briefly outlines some of the major processes that may be involved in wear and puts forward some potentially useful and instructive questions that, for the sake of simplicity, classify the wear process into three categories. The first category is wear primarily caused by adhesion between sliding surfaces; the second category is wear primarily caused by non-stick processes; and the third category is a wide range of wear types, with adherent and non-adherent The interaction between the processes causes a wear that appears to have its own characteristics. This article discusses the wear history of metals, polymers, and ceramics and concludes with the final view that due to the complexity of the interaction of the various wear cycles, the wear of any given system is predictive of material properties and that for many years to come Lane, may not be able to solve.
