The French Revolution had a significant impact on Scotland. The big events in France and their impact on Scotland sparked a heated debate over public publications, and the first civil activism was erected in parts of Scotland in the 18th century. Benefiting from the economic improvements that arose in the late eighteenth century, the people of Scotland began to hate the political rule of land elites and began to realize the importance of the reforms. Only after the French Revolution broke out in Scotland was a wave of massive and radical reform movement that touched the ruling elite deeply. From the beginning, the Scottish public expressed their support for France’s efforts to reform the political system. But in the mid 1792, the controversy over the French Revolution showed a polarization in Scotland. From mid-1792 to early 1794, an unprecedented radical movement took place in Scotland. Numerous advocates have launched a wide range of outreach activities, organizing petitions, giving speeches and forming dozens of local communities. The sudden rise of the storm of reform was widely spread and gradually begun to take shape. These associations all expressed their sympathy for the French Revolution and their opposition to the war against Japan. They tried hard to demand the reform of the parliamentary system. In view of this, the Scottish authorities decided to arrest the sponsors of these campaigns and decided to promote the sentiments of the loyalists and step up anti-legal propaganda efforts. The Scottish allegianceists use various means to suppress the radicals’ newspapers or hinder potential activist activities. Undoubtedly, the massive propaganda loyalist movement caused serious damage to the Scottish radical movement, which led to the morale of the Scottish militants afterwards and the resulting depression.
