16、17世纪是英国社会的转型时期,也是社会各阶层大变迁的阶段.这一阶段社会结构在新的格局下重新组合,中等阶层脱颖而出,并在新环境下孕育出了符合本阶层意识形态的价值观.这些价值观既包括具有明显入世倾向的财富观;也包括为社会各成员流动敞开大门的开放性观念;还包括对绅士身份的狂热追求.
