1949年中华人民共和国成立后,中国银行回到了人民的怀抱,获得了新生。在1949～1979年这段时期,作为国家外汇外贸专业银行,中国银行统一经营管理国家外汇,开展国际贸易结算、侨汇和其他非贸易外汇业务,全力支持国家外贸发展,并充分发挥海外机构的作用,成为促进我国对外经贸发展的主要银行。
