宋代，在消防史上最大的贡献，无疑是诞生了世界第一个专职消防队。 白寿彝先生主编的《中国通史》第七卷《五代辽宋夏金时期》（上海人民出版社，１９９９年出版）丙编第五章《城市和镇市》有《消防新制度》一节。该卷主编陈振在论述北宋京城汴京（今河南省开封市）的消防组织时指出：『这是世界城市史上最早的专业消防队。』 该卷在论述南宋京城临安（今浙江省杭州市）消防组织时指出：『是当时世界上所有城市中最完善的，已与近代城市的消防组织相类似。』 这是历史学家第一次对中国古代消防组织作出了权威的评价。
The Song Dynasty, the greatest contribution in the history of fire, is undoubtedly the birth of the world’s first full-time fire brigade. Volume VII of “General History of China” edited by Mr. Bai Shouyi, “Five Dynasties Liao and Song Dynasties Xiajin Period” (Shanghai People’s Publishing House, 1999) Part C “City and Town” contains the section entitled “New Fire System”. Chen Zhen, the editor in chief of the volume, pointed out during the discussion on the fire protection organization of Bijing (now Kaifeng, Henan) that “this is the earliest professional fire brigade in the history of the world’s cities. Commenting on the fire protection organization in Linan, now in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the volume said: ”It was the most complete of all the cities in the world at that time and was similar to the fire organizations in modern cities. This is the first time that historians have made an authoritative assessment of ancient Chinese fire organizations.
