Once upon a time, there was a little bird which got stuck in a flurry (一阵) of snow because she never shut her beak (鸟嘴) and did not hear the other birds speak when it was time to fly south for the winter. She would just sit on a branch and sing, and when the wind blew, she would just swing to-and-fro. She didn’t even know all the other birds had heard the words to leave. So when winter came, she sat there and sang, until it snowed. She then fell fast asleep in the winter’s cold and her poor little toes froze to her perch (栖木) in the tree.
A little girl in a house near by was wondering why she no longer heard the song of the bird. So when the snowing stopped, she put on her shoes and socks, and went out to search and found the little bird hanging from her perch.
At first the girl cried, for she thought the bird had died. But upon her touch the little bird moved her wings up and down and cried. At once the girl knew what she had to do before the little bird flew. Careful not to hurt her beak, or break a feather, the girl carefully picked the bird up, and put the bird in her sweater. She then brought her in the house out of the weather.
With the bird beside her, she too fell fast asleep. Once by the warm fire, the little bird began to peep (发出吱吱声) once again, and sing her song.
