晚清出版的外国女杰传中,明治日本的影响相当大。其中由著名作家德富芦花编辑、1898年印行的《世界古今名妇鉴》比较特殊,属于隐身文本,不为中国译者提及,却有多篇传记经过反复译介,广泛流传,因此值得重视。本文从介绍《世界古今名妇鉴》的原文本入手,分三节作了探讨:将最早由梁启超译述、并一向被视为梁著的《罗兰夫人传》放在女性语境中,揭示其与晚清流行的“女子为国民之母”说法的关联;考察充满革命激情的《世界十女杰》,如何经由有意识的改写与添加,使传主因切合晚清国情,成为中国女性寻求独立、解放取法的楷模;最后再就《女报》(《女学报》)、《女子世界》与《中国新女界杂志》三个晚清女报的“传记”栏,分析其选取、隐括的译文同各自杂志宗旨的密切呼应——从而呈现具有“百变身”的《世界古今名妇鉴》参与晚清“女界革命”的实绩。
