Foster, a British novel theorist, divides the characters into two kinds: “flat” and “round”. The concepts of “flat” and “circle” are two concepts that are not very scientific in nature, but have been used to describe the one-way and multiple character hierarchies of artistic images. Similarly, using these two terms to summarize the evolution of the image of military personnel in contemporary Chinese novels is an interesting point of view. The image of military personnel in Chinese novels in the 1980s basically went through a hard-working process from “flat to round”. Such a generalization does not mean simply praising, but merely an objective description of the writer’s aesthetic tendencies.
