“和”是一个意义广泛的重要美学范畴。魏晋南北朝的刘勰在主要继承儒、道、佛及玄学等各家的“中和”美学思想也进行了或多或少的吸收借鉴,成为审美范畴“和”的集大成者之一。在其创作文论巨著《文心雕龙》时,尚“和”的思想也不自觉地贯穿始终。具体表现在“惟务折衷”、“兼解以俱通”的方法论、文质论、风骨论、音乐美学观和总体的和谐文论观上。
