The new Japanese government, led by Socialist Chairman Murayama Fukuchi, has been in existence for 60 days. As soon as he took office, Murayama indicated that on some controversial issues, he urged both the Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Party to step up consultations, abandon the distinction between ideologies and devote themselves to the unification of policies. On July 28, at the Socialist Central Executive Committee, “the basic stance of our party on the current political situation” (draft) was decided and submitted to the National Congress of the Socialist Party to be held on September 3 for consideration and approval. The draft made major changes to the socialist party’s defense, security and relations with the United States so far.
