OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics and existing gender differences of unpaid blood donation in comparative study subjects. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to enrolle a total of 1 065 donated blood donors and blood donors from Beijing Red Cross Blood Center during May to September 2016 and 1,065 non-blood donors accompanying the questionnaire. The donation cognitive questionnaire was used to investigate the donors ’cognition of blood donation, and the independent sample t-test was used to explore the gender differences of donors’ cognition. Results Male donors’ cognitive score, positive cognition of blood donation, negative cognition of blood donation and knowledge of donating blood were all higher than those of the whole study. The score of female cognition of blood donation and score of 3 dimensions (73.31 ± 11.44 vs70.25 ± 12.67, P <0.05). The negative cognitive score of donating blood (70.63 ± 12.92 vs 67.92 ± 14.22, P <0.05) was significantly lower than that of the study subjects , Blood donation knowledge score (70.50 ± 19.44 vs 64.52 ± 21.89, P <0.05) was significantly higher than that of females, positive cognitive score was higher than females, but the difference was not statistically significant; with the increase of blood donation, male and female blood donation Cognitive score increased. Conclusion There is a gender difference in the blood donation cognition of the study population. The male blood donation awareness is better than that of the female. With the increase of the number of blood donation, the blood donation cognition of both men and women are increased.
