In November 1972, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency jointly held the second International Conference on Food Radiation in Mantou, India. One hundred and sixty representatives from 29 countries and four international organizations attended the meeting. The meeting exchanged and discussed the application of atomic energy in food processing insecticide sterilization and inhibition of plant germination and other aspects of research and usage. So far in the food business there have been nine countries and organizations of the Soviet Union, Denmark, the Netherlands and the World Health Organization that have approved the application of atomic radiation to suppress the germination of potatoes. The Soviet Union, the United States, Canada and the World Health Organization approved the application of atomic energy radiation to treat foodstuffs to kill stored grain pests.
