Genetic and immunological factors are now considered an important factor in the pathogenesis of leprosy and have an impact on susceptibility to leprosy and how it manifests. Many observations of cellular immunodeficiency in leprosy indicate that susceptibility and disease manifestations depend on the immune response. These immunological factors may be hereditary. There is growing evidence that the responses controlled by specific immune response genes play an important role in disease susceptibility, and these immune response genes are in turn linked to the major tissue suitability system (HL-A). It is assumed that the susceptibility of leprosy and its manifestations may also be related to HL-A antigen.
