氧化胆固醇(Oxch)是胆固醇经氧化后产生的一系列氧化产物。在空气中,胆固醇和其它许多物质一样,可以自身氧化(autoxidation)生成不同的Oxch。有关Oxch的研究,最早起始于1895年Lifschützt的工作。到了1967年,Smith等首次用硅胶板薄层层析法分离出32种不同的Oxch。此后,这方面的工作有了很大的进展。很多研究表明,Oxch在理化性质与生物学功能上都和胆固醇有许多明显的不同。Oxch能抑制酶活性,抑制胆固醇的生物合成,抑制细胞的DNA合成,具有细胞毒、血管毒作用,具有致突变性与致癌性。1976年,Peng等人开始研究Oxch与动脉粥样硬化的
