Objective To observe the special morphological changes of peripheral blood lymphocytes in irradiated Chernobyl workers. Methods The Chernobyl accident cleanup workers were selected as the experimental group. Peripheral blood samples were prepared by conventional methods. The samples were air-dried, mixed with p-aminobenzoic acid and stained with Giemsa method. Counting 500 cells per sample under light microscope , Observed and recorded the incidence of different special morphological nuclei, for statistical analysis. Results Most of the irradiated subjects showed more lymphoid cells with caudate processes. Based on the morphological features of the caudal protrusions on these nuclei, they were divided into 16 types and recorded the incidence of each caudate-like cell and distribution rate analysis. Conclusions The changes of irradiated caudate nucleus of lymphocytes may be a significant marker of irradiation. It may be of both theoretical and practical value to retrospectively study the effect of radiation dose on obtaining more detailed biological information of radiation effects.
